Laura May Gibbs (1877-1964) was an Australian children's book author and illustrator. She was known for creating storybook characters like gumnut babies, Banksia men, and other bush creatures that were inspired by the Australian flora and fauna. Gibbs was born in England, but her family emigrated to Australia when she was four years old. She grew up in Sydney, where she developed a love of nature and a talent for drawing. She studied art at the Sydney School of Art and also took classes in London.
Gibbs's first book, published in 1916, was called "Snugglepot and Cuddlepie." It was a collection of stories she had written and illustrated about two gumnut babies who went on adventures in the Australian bush. The book was an instant success and became a classic of Australian children's literature. Gibbs went on to write and illustrate more than 40 children's books, including sequels to "Snugglepot and Cuddlepie."
Gibbs's books were beloved by generations of Australian children for their charming stories and whimsical illustrations. She also inspired a wide range of merchandise, including toys, dolls, and even a theme park in Sydney called "The Enchanted Forest." Today, Laura May Gibbs is remembered as one of Australia's most celebrated children's authors and illustrators.
